[TW-Movie] Pleasure Factory (2007)

Warning: Mature 18+

A series of intertwining tales involve “pleasure seekers and pleasure providers” during the course of one night in Geylang, Singapore’s red-light district. There are three distinct stories, united only by the presence of characters from all the stories in a streetside eatery:

Jonathan, who has yet to lose his virginity, is escorted around Geylang by his army buddy, Kiat, who wants to help his friend make his passage into manhood. The two men visit various brothels, where the touts bestow the various qualities and nationalities of their women, who hail from China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India and elsewhere. Jonathan eventually settles on a young Chinese woman whom he envisions being wrapped in a towel.

A teenage girl is called to meet an older prostitute in a hotel room, where the older woman, Linda, is servicing a heavyset older man, who wants to take the younger girl’s virginity. The girl is followed to the hotel by a young man named Chris. When she goes in the hotel room, Chris sits outside and waits.

A woman in a red dress gets in a convertible with a man. She later shows up at the streetside restaurant and pays a young busker for his “special song”, which he doesn’t end up singing, and instead is taken back to the woman’s room.

[TW-Movie] Blue Gate Crossing (2002)

Bold tomboy Lin (Lin Shu-Hui Liang) and pretty, reserved Meng (Lun-Mei Guey) are Taiwanese high school girls whose extremely close friendship revolves around Meng’s crush on Zhang (Bo-Lin Chen), the popular star of the boys’ swim team. When Lin takes it upon herself to act as the go-between for her friend, Zhang and Lin begin spending time together. Though Lin attempts to envision herself with him, her true romantic feelings are for her girlfriend Meng.

BLUE GATE CROSSING’s delicate subject matter is carefully handled by director Yee Chih-Yen, whose sensitive script avoids stereotypes in favor of an honest portrayal of the universally understood pangs of teenage attraction. In the uncertainty of adolescent love, even the possibility of a kiss from a crush seems nonexistent.

With its truthful, slyly humorous approach; its crisp, bright imagery; and its appealing, altogether believable young cast; BLUE GATE CROSSING treats the confusion and frustration of growing up with respect than is rarely found in similar western teen films.

Starring:
-Chen Bo-lin as Zhang Shihao
-Kwai Lunmei as Meng Kerou
-Liang Shu-hui as Lin Yuezhen
-Joanna Chou as Mrs. Meng

[TW-Movie] Secret (2007)

Ye Xianglun, a music student majoring in piano, transfers to Tamkang (Danjiang) Secondary School. It is a school famous for musically talented students, especially for those who play piano. On the first day of school, as he wanders through the piano building, he hears a mysterious melody being played that leads him to Lu Xiaoyu, another piano major. When he asks her about the song she was playing, she tells him that it is a secret that cannot be told. The two develop a relationship that is clouded in mystery. When Xianglun tells Xiaoyu of the demolition of the piano building on graduation day, she teaches him the song that he heard on the first day of school.

However, when a mis-passed note leads to Xianglun’s accidental kissing of another girl, Xiaoyu disappears for five months, only to return on graduation day and mysteriously disappear again. Xianglun asks around and discovers that Xiaoyu was actually a student from the class of 1979, who graduated 20 years ago. Xiaoyu time traveled to the present via a piece called “Secret” that she played on an old piano in the piano building. She had fallen in love with Xianglun, but the only barrier is that, in the present, the first person she sees on each trip is the only person that can see her.

When Xiaoyu was misled that Xianglun liked another girl, she returned to her time, 1979 for five months. During her absence, her story spread and everyone believed that she was crazy. Remembering that the piano room would be destroyed on graduation day of 1999, she tried time traveling to see Xianglun one last time, but was mislead once again that he liked another girl. Xiaoyu retreats back to her own time and died from an asthma attack, trying to communicate with Xianglun via writing on a desk with white out.

After finally learning of Xiaoyu’s story, Xianglun realizes that the piece that she taught him was “Secret”, which had the power to take the pianist forward or backward in time depending on the tempo at which it is played. He rushes off to the piano room, which is ready to be torn down. As the demolition begins, Xianglun begins “Secret” from memory, recalling something Xiaoyu told him while teaching him the piece: “I always play it that fast when I go back”. The last scene is when the 1979 Tamkang (Danjiang) Secondary School graduation picture is taken, in which Xianglun and Xiaoyu are present.

She accepts his offer to become his girlfriend on the condition that he manages to enter university. Later, as Shane pulls his act together and Jonathan begins to experience a sexual identity crisis, the former does his best to keep his feelings for Carrie secret in order to protect the feelings of his lifelong friend.

Producer – Stephen Chow

A devilishly entertaining curveball thrown at unsuspecting family audiences, “CJ7” is “E.T.” as reimagined by the premier clown of Chinese cinema, Stephen Chow. Whether American viewers will respond with the enthusiasm of their Chinese counterparts remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that Mr. Chow’s notion of family is decidedly more Addams than Brady. A simple fairy tale — albeit with a perverseness that no Disney executive would permit — “CJ7” finds Mr. Chow in a Chaplinesque mood as Ti, an impoverished widower caring for his young son, Dicky (the 9-year-old actress Xu Jiao in her debut). By day Ti works long hours on a construction site to pay for Dicky’s elite private school; at night they return to a sweltering, cockroach-infested shack with unreliable electricity. Both suffer constant bullying: Ti’s overbearing boss (Lam Tze Chung) berates him for having ideas above his station, while Dicky’s fastidious teacher (Lee Sheung Ching) and snotty schoolmates treat him like a leper. Scouring the local dump one evening to supplement his son’s wardrobe, Ti discovers a strange green ball that, when placed in Dicky’s curious hands, transforms into a saucer-eyed creature resembling an ineptly groomed cockapoo. Filmed in the seaport town of Ningbo in Zhejiang Province, “CJ7” (the title is a reference to the Chinese space program) has an airy widescreen look that counters the privations of Ti and Dicky’s surroundings. — Jeannette Catsoulis, The New York Times

[HK-Movie] Ip Man (2008)

Adapted from the life story of Ip Man – the grand master of the Wing Chun style of kung fu and sifu of legendary kung fu superstar Bruce Lee. This movie will be the first important record of the master’s life. Ip’s persistent devotion to Wing Chun is a classic example of the love and respect shown to wushu and the freedom and spirit it represents. Ip Man is a concept, a spirit, a way of thinking – and it exemplifies a new peak in Hong Kong’s wushu movies.

Rating: PG
Genre: Action
Starring: Mallika Sherawath, Lynn Hung, Simon Yam, Donnie Yen
Directed by: Wilson Yip

This is one of the films I went against my better judgment to watch and it turned out to be surprisingly good. Despite banal reviews, I watched it with a group of friends at a midnight screening. We were kept enthralled and fixated by the intense and swift action sequences which unfold one after another. The resounding impact and forceful blows can be clearly felt by the THX equipped theatre we were in. Our eyes were glued to the screen as various martial artists in the film engaged in nerve wrecking and brutal fistfights that will leave you at the edge of your seat. The story is about the life story of the titular martial arts master and his quest to invoke unity in the people of China to stand up against oppression during the Japanese occupation. Donnie Yen does a surprisingly good portayal of Ip Man, infusing his character with wry humour and staunch dignity. However, besides him, the secondary characters fade into the background with little screen presence and narrative importance. Still, even if you are not a martial arts fan, you can enjoy this simple story about honour, humility and unity.

[HK-Movie] Sparrow (2008)

Diverting from the usual crime genre, “Sparrow” goes for the musical feel. Its central characters, a band of pickpockets who comb the streets of Hong Kong, are always floating about, adjusting their hair and looking ever so likely to break into song at any moment. The jazzy score confirms the direction. The leader played by Simon Yam heads Gordon Lam, Law Wing Cheong and Kenneth Cheung, as they go about in leisure to further their criminal enterprise. However, they seem more interested in riding bicycles, eating fried rice and photographing landscapes more than anything else.

So do not be fooled this is not an action movie. By the time Kelly Lin waltzes into Simon Yam’s viewfinder, the story gets more romantic. She prances about exuding false mystery, while we get semi-sucked into a lot of background about some tycoon mobster she’s whored herself to.

Dreamy and very fleeting, “Sparrow” is a date movie for couples skipping work on a weekday. For more serious cineastes, its intended lack of depth might irk a few. It’s also strange to see so much of Kelly Lin these days. Malaysians seem to get a hold of many of her recent movies like “Mad Detective” and “Triangle”. It can be a case of miscasting because Lin’s screen persona does not measure up to the star appeal needed for some of her roles. She could pull off being the triad moll in “Boarding Gate” alongside Asia Argento but in “Sparrow”, it seems unlikely that her demure looks can get a rise out of so many men, let alone fool them into doing her bidding.

Much like her, the movie itself isn’t a head-turner. “Sparrow” makes good home cinema viewing for lazy Sunday afternoons. No conventional romance in this here heist – just some excellent photography of birds and bicycles.

[HK-Movie] Killzone (2004)

A terse, satisfying Hong Kong actioner of the old school, SPL offers a sight that will thrill genre devotees: a brutal battle between Iron Monkey’s Donnie Yen and the still-nimble Sammo Hung. Before delivering that big finish, director Wilson … Full DescriptionYip adds a few fresh spins on a familiar story about a team of cops determined to bring down Hung’s big crime lord. The moments of lachrymose melodrama (everyone here has a father issue) gel surprisingly well with SPL’s otherwise ruthless sensibility.

Wilson Yip’s dynamic crime thriller follows an aging cop (Simon Yam) so determined to take down the brutal gangster (Sammo Hung) responsible for the death of his god daughter that he resorts to ethically dubious tactics. His plans are complicated by his failing health, the sudden death of an undercover agent, and the arrival of an uptight, painfully honest new detective (Donnie Yen).

[HK-Movie] Butterfly Lovers (2008)

Some stories are timeless, and Butterfly Lovers is one of them. Director Jingle Ma (Fly Me to Polaris) tackles one of the classics with his retelling of this tragic love story, which also served as the basis for the 1963 Shaw Brother’s classic The Love Eterne and Tsui Hark’s 1994 drama The Lovers. This new version is a clever alternate take on the story of ill-fated lovers Leung Shan Pak and Cheuk Ying Toi, and is given a martial arts spin thanks to the masterful fight choreography of Ching Siu Tung (Hero). Wu Chun of Taiwan boy band Fahrenheit and Charlene Choi of Hong Kong’s Twins play the two young lovers, with a host of talent from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan joining them. Actor-singer Hu Ge plays Wu Chun’s main romantic rival, with supporting roles filled out by martial artists Hung Yan Yan and Fan Siu Wong, Shaw Brothers legend Ti Lung and Taiwan singer-songwriter Harlem Yu.

Adorable Zhu Yan Gi (Charlene Choi) is female, but her father (Ti Lung) wants her to learn martial arts from the all-male Soul Ease Clan. To ensure her entry into the school, Yan Gi disguises herself as a male scholar, but her slight frame and sometimes ditzy nature make it hard for her to pass the rigorous tests. Luckily, she has an ally in the school’s top student, handsome Liang Chun Shan (Wu Chun), who tutors Yan Gi and even nurses her back to health when she takes ill. The two innocently fall in love, but even knowledge of Yan Gi’s true identity may not insure their happiness. Yan Gi’s childhood friend Ma (Hu Ge) has long carried a torch for her, and is not above using violence and blackmail to insure that she becomes his wife. When Ma’s treachery is revealed, Chun Shan has no choice but to use all that he’s learned from the Soul Ease Clan to exact justice. But will it be too late to save Yan Gi from a tragic fate?

[HK-Movie] Bullets of Love (2001)

Hong Kong Cinema goes recruiting in Japan again, and they come up looking good. Following in the footsteps of fellow Japanese Drama megastars Takako Tokiwa and Takashi Sorimachi is Asaka Seto, who gets two roles in the Andrew Lau thriller Bullets of Love. Seto acquits herself well, showing charisma and range. The movie itself doesn’t match her efforts, but it’s a reasonably entertaining effort.

Leon Lai stars as Sam, a kick-ass Hong Kong cop who’s engaged to beautiful Hong Kong prosecutor Ann (Asaka Seto playing Chinese). The two are teamed on a case to take down vicious bad guy Night (the glowering Terence Yin), but only succeed in putting the bastard away for three years. Apparently three years is still too much for the multi-felonious Night, who swears undying revenge. He sics a dour Japanese female assassin on the couple while they vacation in Paris. Before Sam knows it, he’s out a fiancee and sent into a funk.
Three years later, Sam has moved to the rural island of Tai O and is now a fisherman. His life consists of fishing (duh) and hanging with the locals (Chan Wai-Man, Ng Chi-Hung and Ronald Cheng, among others), though he still pines for his departed lawyer girlfriend. However, hope arrives in the form of You (Asaka Seto again!), a Japanese tourist who’s the spitting image of Ann. As you’d expect Sam falls hard for the dead ringer, and after a period of extraneous activity, she returns the feeling. However, Night is due to get released soon and plans revenge. And You may not be all that she seems. – - LoveHkFilm

[HK-Movie] Love is Elsewhere (2008)

Low budget indie film about the lives and loves of a group of tweenies in HK’s SoHo district, centred around the bar “Love in SoHo” whose owners are renowned for dispensing love advice.

Vincent Chui’s film has some funny moments and some vaguely romantic ones. It tries not to be too sugary in its depiction of young love, but doesn’t manage to be particularly insightful instead.

The cast are mostly young Cantopop stars making their acting debuts, and most do a pretty good job. Actually the younger cast members generally act better than their older and theoretically more experienced colleagues.

[HK-Movie] Superfans (2008)

Susi (Charlene Choi) was a typical super fan, chasing after popular singers everyday. After having taken the HKCEE public exam, she was very free and became a full time member of Sampson’s fans club.

Sampson was one of the two “Heavenly Kings” in the pop music circle. Susi and her admirer Water (Leo Ku), who was a postman, puffed up Sampson on the Internet every day. Out of spite, they also smeared Sampson’s competitor Yan and did many crazy things to harass him, such as sending him funeral chrysanthemum and paper money for the dead.

One day, Sampson’s assistant got hurt by an accident. Since Sampson had to attend the “Beijing Award Presentation” and the “Hong Kong Award Presentation” very soon, he needed a replacement assistant urgently and asked Susi to fill in for the place. Susi was overjoyed.

As Sampson’s temporary helper, Susi had a lot of works to handle. Making things worse, Sampson just treated her as if she was a maid. Luckily, her good friend and secret admirer Water was always by her side to save the day. He even accompanied Susi to Beijing.

What surprised Susi the most was that Sampson eventually showed his true colours. She found out that he was up to something secret in a trip to Taiwan…

[HK-Movie] Be With Me (2005)

Be With Me is a tapestry of three stories woven around the themes of love, hope, and destiny. Although the main characters come from different backgrounds and lead different lives, they all long to be with their loved one.

“Meant To Be” is about an aging provision shopkeeper grappling with loneliness. Just when he is about to give up hope, he chances upon an autobiography which changes his life. The autobiography in this story is real – it is the story of Theresa Chan, who plays herself and shares her remarkable life experience in the film.

“So In Love” is the bitter-sweet chronicles of two teenage girls in a love less ordinary. A chain of events spark off a flurry of SMS messages that will drastically rewrite the blueprints of their lives.

“Finding Love” follows the mundane life of a middle aged security guard who has two loves in life — food and a high flying professional who works in the same building he does. The first he indulges in with great passion; the second, alas, he can only admire from afar. He decides to bridge the divide with a letter.

Unbeknownst to them, these different souls will share the same stage in a play written by Fate, one which involves the themes of love, tragedy, and redemption. The characters in the movie are fictitious except for Theresa Chan. Deaf and blind since she was 14, Theresa – who is now 61 – is a remarkable woman who has triumphed over her disabilities to live an amazing life. She is the film’s beacon, a symbol of strength and hope.

[HK-Movie] Infernal Affairs 2 (2003)

Considered one of the most artistically made commercial blockbusters ever to come out of Hong Kong, INFERNAL AFFAIRS has garnered coveted film awards galore and record-breaking box-office returns to date. This thriller of a fatal tug-of-war between Yan, an undercover cop in the triads, and Ming, a triads’ mole in the police force, not only introduces two of the most memorable tragic heroes in contemporary world cinema, but also a trove of compelling characters like Wong, Yan’s mentor in the police force, and Sam, Ming’s clandestine boss in the triads.

[Birth of a Legend]
INFERNAL AFFAIRS opens with Yan and Ming as young men in 1991 embarking on their journeys as moles for life, and then jumpstarts to 2002 when their pasts finally catch up with them, culminating in a climactic showdown in the finale. Set between the years 1991 and 1997, INFERNAL AFFAIRS II supplies the missing link as to how and why these two fledgling innocents will ultimately become a callous mole and an undercover cop with ennui.
While Yan is embroiled in the family saga of a triad cartel inextricably tied to his origins, Ming is enmeshed in an oedipal fixation with his boss’s wife. Meanwhile, mind-boggling twists and turns are injected into the plot that both shatter established presumptions and shed new light on the characters’ convoluted relations. Friendships fracture. Foes join forces. Nothing is what it appears to be.

[Making of a Legend]
Teenage heartthrobs Edison Chen and Shawn Yue reprise their roles of Ming and Yan as young men with an eye-opening melange of fluidity and depth.
Awards-winning Anthony Wong and Eric Tsang dazzle as Wong and Sam again, but this time they start off as collaborators instead of sworn enemies as they will later become in INFERNAL AFFAIRS.
Other noteworthy new characters include Hau played by Francis Ng (The Mission), the kingpin of a triad cartel; SP Lok by Hu Jun (Lan Yu), Wong’s closest friend and colleague; and Mary by Carina Lau (Days of Being Wild), Sam’s wife.

[HK-Movie] Infernal Affairs 3 (2003)

Infernal Affairs III picks up where the first film left off. Ming (Andy Lau) is cleared of any charges involving Yan’s (Tony Leung) death, and is eventually assigned to the Internal Affairs division. He discovers that another cop, Yeung (Leon Lai of Fallen Angels), quickly rising through the ranks of the police department, has a mysterious link to Shen (Chen Daoming of Hero), who was apparently Sam’s (Eric Tsang) connection to the mainland.

Ming strongly suspects that Yeung is another one of Sam’s moles, and is determined to expose him, while keeping his own connection to Sam a secret. It’s a tricky proposition because Yeung also seems to suspect Ming, and appears to have the same goal in mind. With the help of Dr. Lee (Kelly Chen), Yan’s psychiatrist, Ming looks deeper into Yan’s final days, and flashbacks explore the undercover cop’s dealings with both Yeung and Shen.

Eventually, Ming finds an incriminating tape of Sam conversing with his mole, and has a climactic confrontation with Yeung. Anthony Wong and Chapman To also reprise their roles from the first two films in flashbacks.

[HK-Movie] Painted Skin (2008)

Donnie Yen’s horror/action/historical epic “Painted Skin” has the potential to be really, really awful, or just this side of okay. I had high hopes for the movie

when it was just revving up production, but everything I’ve seen of it since has been a tad … confusing. This, despite the usually very reliable Gordon Chan directing. But in any case, here’s the first trailer that I’ve run across for “Painted Skin”. Even after seeing this trailer, I still have no idea how this thing is going to turn out. It could be okay, but it could also be really, really awful. Right now, I’ve given up hoping for it to be anything great, which is unfortunate, but it’s difficult to be TOO optimistic the way this thing is looking right now.

Starring Vicki Zhao and Donnie Yen, and directed by Gordon Chan. It’s due out in the Chinese territories in September.

[HK-Movie] Tactical Unit: No Way Out (2008)

The second installment in a series of spin-off films based on Johnnie To’s award-winning 2003 police noir PTU, Tactical Unit – No Way Out continues to delve into the gray world of the uniformed officers who patrol the streets of Hong Kong. Produced by Johnnie To and directed by Lawrence Lau (My Name is Fame), this gritty police drama details the dangers and desperation faced by those on both sides of the law as night falls and cops and triad cross paths in the same sleepless streets. Franchise stars Simon Yam and Maggie Siu headline the film, along with usual suspects Lam Suet, Derek Tsang, Samuel Pang, and Otto Wong and Osman Hung of EO2. When a late-night triad dispute leads to the death of an innocent man, the police make a swift crackdown on all triad activities in the area, forcing small-time gangster Fai into a corner. After triad boss Lok beats him up for not paying back his debt, Fai turns to crime for survival, and ends up getting arrested by the PTU. Seeing no way out, the increasingly desperate Fai pays revenge on the cops and crooks who have driven him to the end of his rope.

[HK-Movie] The Forbidden Legend Sex And Chopsticks (2008)

Warning: Mature Content

This adaptation of the classic Chinese novel Jin Ping Mei is a solid genre entry, if not an actual good movie. It has babes, boobs, and it doesn’t really bore, so it’ll likely meet the expecations of its intended audience. Still, it needs more chopsticks.

[HK-Movie] High Noon (2008)

High Noon is the Hong Kong chapter in an Eric Tsang-produced trilogy of youth films set in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China. Drawing on the screenplay of the first Taiwan-set Winds of September chapter, High Noon again follows nine teenagers whose lives and friendship evolve greatly in the course of one fateful year, but presents a completely different narrative and tone unique to Hong Kong. Moving at hyper pace through the raucous rites of adolescence, the coming-of-age feature paints a hot-blooded portrait of youth and friendship that is bright, humorous, and heartbreaking. Starring an impressive newcomer cast that includes Anjo Leung from Magic Boy, High Noon packs a strong punch in its realistic depiction of high school drama, the heat of youth, and the loss of innocence.

High school student Wing (Lam Yiu Sing) and his six buddies are typical rambunctious teens who are better at cursing and troublemaking than schoolwork. Though they all hail from different backgrounds and personalities – the loner, the bookworm, the Mainlander, the rich kid, the playboy, the class clown, the rebel – they form a tight bond as they navigate the jungle of high school together in a flurry of fistfights and slurred slang. Acting out against the pressure of home and school, the boys cycle through a laundry list of problems – girls, grades, family, drugs, sex, violence – that threaten their fast, fragile existences. The harder they struggle to hold on to friendship, the more they lose themselves and each other.
